The process of neurotransmitter release at a synapse has been shown to be regulated by the family of synaptic vesicle-associated phosphoproteins known as synapsins. The three family members, synapsin I - III bind ATP however synapsin I only binds ATP in the presence of Ca2+, ATP binding to synapsin II is Ca2+ independent while Ca2+ inhibits the binding of ATP to synapsin III. Hence ATP binding to the synapsins is differentially regulated by Ca2+ thus generating different functional properties for three similar proten.
Recent studies have implicated synapsin III in the schizophrenia and bipolar disorder .
