The BTB domain (named after the Drosophila transcription factors Bric-a-brac, Tramtrack, and Broad) is a protein-protein interaction motif found in all eukaryotes. Sequence conservation of this motif is highly variable and widely distributed in diverse proteins. BTB domains may serve as oligomerization domains or function as binding interfaces with other proteins.
Two main classes of BTB/POZ proteins are distinguished by the association of the BTB/POZ motif with either zinc finger (ZF) or kelch motif. Myoneurin belongs to the first group, whose members have been implicated in regulatory functions of gene expression.
Myoneurin is expressed in various tissues, but its main expression is found in the neuromuscular system. Expression of Myoneurin in muscle is developmentally regulated and dysregulated after nerve section. Myoneurin is located in and around synaptic myonuclei and restricted myoneurin expression in synaptic myonuclei seems to be controlled by muscle electrical activity. A role as regulator of synaptic genes has been suggested.
