GPX2: Human glutathione peroxidase 2
PDB Code: 2HE3
Glutathione peroxidase 2 (GPX2, GI-GPX) belongs to the family of selenium dependent glutathione peroxidases, which comprises five members. Like other glutathione peroxidases, GPX2A utilizes electrons from glutathione to reduce hydrogen peroxides and fatty acid peroxides. GPX2 occurs in the cytosol and nucleus as a homotetramer and is mainly expressed in the epithelium in the gastrointestinal tract, but has also been detected in the liver and the large intestine. Its expression is especially high in the Paneth cells in the small intestine, which play a major role in the mucosal immunity. GPX2 is up-regulated in human colorectal adenomas, in Barret’s esophageal mucosa, and during neoplastic transformation of squamous epithelial cells.
