BLVRA: Human biliverdin reductase alpha
PDB Code: 2H63
Biliverdin reductase alpha (BLVRA) is an evolutionarily conserved enzyme, and in mammals it is involved in the degradation of heme (Fe-protoporphyrin IX) by catalyzing the NAD(P)(H) dependent reduction of biliverdin to bilirubin. Bilirubin is an important cellular small molecule antioxidans, and serves to inactivate reactive oxygen species produced under conditions of oxidative stress. A catalytic cycle consisting of effective reduction of biliverdin to bilirubin by BLVRA, ensures that this cytoprotectant despite comparably low tissue levels, is available to inactivate lipophilic reactive oxygen species, thus producing biliverdin.
